Have you noticed that the fork tube covers are different from each other? One of them was white under the black paint. That leads me to believe it was replaced at some point, along with the fork leg it lived on. That's a bit of history of the Old Girl that I knew nothing about. Perhaps she'd been crashed at some point, before I got her. That would have been in the first five years of her life, I got her in 1971.

I've been doing lots of little things.

I primed, wet sanded, and painted the fork ears and tube covers. The grab handle was primered, sanded and painted. I've ordered two more cans of the 66 AutoColor black, for the second coat of the frame and for the fork sliders. I can't find any of the K&B epoxy I wanted to use on the fork sliders; we don't have any hobby shops nearby.

I spent some time on the wiring harness. I replaced several bullet connectors on the main loom, and I replaced the male and female bullet connectors on the neutral switch and wiring loom. I cut the old tubing off the alternator harness and replaced it. That took some time! And finally, I replaced the fork seals. The seal carriers just unscrewed from the fork legs with no drama, but removing those seals required quite a lot of drama! They refused to budge and I had to literally destroy them to get them out of the carriers. The new seals went in just fine, but they did require a lot of force to get them to seat all the way into the seal carrier.

Right now all of the painted engine covers (Duplicolor engine paint) are in the oven at 240 degrees for an hour. They have 35 minutes left. My kitchen smells of paint solvent - lovely!

I still need to adjust the valves and go through the carburetors. The carbs are very clean on the inside, I just need to clean the outside of them.

After I get the second coat of paint on the frame and it sets up, I'll be able to start reassembly.

The big stuff to do is the wheels. They need some serious cleaning and polishing. The rims are pretty well pitted, but I'm going to use them as is for the time being. The hubs and brake housings look pretty good. I still can't get the speedo cable out of the drive, that thing is frozen but good. I'm leaning towards leaving it alone, the cable is in decent shape and it works. So....

I hate it when a tiny part hits the floor and then traverses to the fourth dimension! The C clip on the kick start pinion gear - the gear that engages the kick start shaft in the transmission - popped off the C clip tool, hit my tummy, hit the floor, and is now in parts unknown. Well, I found one on eBay, 22903-200-000, they seem to be fairly common. It's a good thing!

I'm cleaning the carbs, I wet sanded the frame, I took the front forks apart and cleaned all of the innards, and I did get the right side case cover/kick start parts installed. I hope I installed that pinion and kick start gear correctly (I lined up the "O" on the gears, and then attached the spring to the retainer bolt, which rotated the gears about 90 degrees apart, causing the shaft to rotate against the spring, which would recoil it to neutral - I think). I also hope I installed the clutch adjuster/clutch lifter assembly properly. There is adjustment, but I won't know for sure until the cable goes back on and I try to use the clutch.

I'm running down all of the "is this going to work?" worries in my little brain right now - will the engine start, will it run after it starts, will it leak oil, will the carburetors work, will the charging system work, will the clutch work, will the transmission shift properly??? Getting close enough to tell pretty soon.

All I need is paint!

Hmmmm. I just discovered as I was prepping it for paint that the left side fork slider was originally white, along with the seal cover. Nothing else on the bike was white. Definitely replacements.

Yesterday I was working on making sure the kickstart assembly was indexed properly. It is, and it will return the start lever to the right position. What isn't right is that there are supposed to be TWO shims on the shaft that the kickstart lever is attached to, one on the inside of the case cover, and one on the outside under the start lever - part number 90451-268-000. There was only one, the inside one, present when I disassembled the mechanism. The one that is there is not in the best shape, either. I decided I need to buy a new pair of them. I've spent hours trying to find the shims. "No Longer Available" I may have to cross reference them, somehow.
