headlight shorting

Is it the switch on the headlight or the switch on the handlebar for the high low selection

Have you identified the green and then the green with the white band?. .........lm

My scrambler is just about done - when I try to hook up the headlight - every time I turn on the switch on the headlight - it blows a fuse.
if I disconnect the green double wire - that is grounded to the bracket - the fuse will not blow - but the headlight will not work.

wiring harness

Has anyone used a wiring harness from ebay that comes from China? I was just wondering, mine is shot beyond repair. also will the CB77 also work on the CL77?

I used the wiring diagram posted on this site to help me with my project CL305. Fixed all my problems.

I have another CL 305 Project bike that I am willing to sell/trade. Too many projects.

This provides power to either the high or low beam via the HiLo beam switch. The diagram shows a green wire running from the duplex connector on the main harness which connects to the green wire from the ML terminal on the on the Light switch. The green wire on the main harness provides power to the ML terminal on the light switch. The green wire running between the harness connector and the brown wire on the diagram would be another source of power to the HiLo beam switch if it were actually there. It is NOT THERE on my CL77 and I believe it is not there on any bike or either position of the light switch would turn on the head light instead of just the II position turning on the head light. So, this green wire has been eliminated on the attached diagram. I've redrawn the wiring for this portion and have shown the ground connection near the coils for clarity purposes.

For quick reference, I've created switch position diagrams and tables for both the combination and light switches and included them on the wiring diagram.

I have also elimated any devices that are not on the CL77 US spec bike for 1967 such as electric starter, starter solenoid, parking lamp and the speedo/tach and their associated wiring.

So, if all the CL77 bikes are wired the same, this diagram should work for all of them, at least the US spec models.

If anyone thinks I made an error, please let me know and I'll confirm it with my bike and make a correction if necessary.

In digging up your old post via Search, I found it helpful. However, my eyes not as good as they used to be....hard telling coil hookup + or - and identifying which wire goes where?
Does yellow condenser lead go to + or - on the left coil? And does green condenser lead go to + or - on the right coil?
Also, your post in point #2 indicates a ground to the coil mounting bracket bolt from main harness.....I do not have this on my 66 CL 77, ??

I'll keep it simple.
Each coil gets a Black lead to the + then look at the points plate and you will see the yellow and green attached to the points and the plate has a "R" and "L" stamped in it near the points set for that side. . .................lm

Thanks for following up, LM. I have not been here for a while and just happened to come by to see what's going on and ask a 125 question. Funny how forces in the universe draw you to places at appropriate times.

LM gave you the simple answer to make sure you get it right.

But since I managed to show up today, let me expand a bit so you understand how and why.

The diagram should be laid out so that right coil is on right and left on left in the diagram. So, if you look, you can see where the yellow and Green wires go relative to coil position.

As for +/-, knowing where the condenser goes and why will help you know how to connect them on either a postive or negative ground machine. The condenser is always connected to to the points which is the ground leg for the coils. This is how the points switch the coil on and off. The condensor is tied to the coil ground lead so that when the points open, the points do not arch, which damages them. It also serves to cause a rapid collapse of the field in the primary coil, thus generating a higher voltage in the secondary and a hotter spark at the plug.

Now, look at the black wire and follow it to where it goes. It goes from the ignition switch to the coil. Since the switch controls +12V, that puts the black wire on the + terminal of the coil(s). So, that would lead you to believe that the other wires must be the grounds or -12V. Not that you should guess, but this would confirm where they go since you already know that the condensers are always on the points wire and the points are always the ground connection to the coils. There is one last give-away on the diagram. Note that the Y and G wires coming off the coil and going to the points show the condensers and then a wire from them going to ground. No + or - signs are necessary. It's not your old eyes. They are not there.
