It's open both directions. Is it a Zener diode like on the British bikes that dumps everything over 6 volts to ground?

No, just a diode, so it's toast.

The C105 will run without a battery. The rectifier is used only to charge the battery, in fact the lighting is AC except for the brake light.

Thanks for that info. I have no spark, so I guess I need to look at my ignition circuit also.

Have you pulled the flywheel and checked/cleaned the points? Also clean any rust from the inside of the flywheel. The coil on the left or closer to the rear is the primary coil, the other coil is the lighting coil.

open the points a bit. doesn't hurt to clean things up a bit as well.

No I havent. I was looking for 6v at the points and trying to trace wires. No wonder I couldn't find it there. Thanks for that info.
