What should I be looking for as far as cross model and year compatibility? What fits in my '65? If I can open up my search options then maybe I can find what I am looking for easier.

Having the exact same issues right now. New battery, new rectifier, low charge while running.
As it happens I just picked up this neat book at a swap meet which has a section on testing the stator windings, as well as a shadetree fix. I haven't tried this yet, but figured it'd be useful to many. It is applicable to many hondas of the era.
