Well that did the trick!
An analogue meter shows a pretty consistant 13 volts.
The problem was I was using a voltmeter that was too precise.
So I guess my issue is that my battery is not charging, despite the fact that I am getting "13 volts" to the battery.
Time to get the battery checked professionally, despite the fact that it is showing 13.1 volts with the digital voltmeter and about the same with the analogue.
I now suspect there is a bad cell that is failing under load and not charging properly or something like that...
A simple problem made more difficult by me thinking (in the wrong direction) too much perhaps?
Regardless I identified some potential issues with that dodgy burnt wiring anyway and have avoided some future problems with any luck.
voltage from retifier varied CA77

If you've got 13V at the battery with the engine running you are golden. Sounds like a battery that doesn't know what to do with the gifts it's being given. Wish that were my problem. I've got 12.5V max.Greggie-e wrote:Sorry I meant to say it but didn't,
Thanks a heap for the advice.
I hope that is the end of the problem.

I had the battery tested at the local Battery World shop.
The CCA's were way down on what they should be.
They were 8, they should have been 80 or so apparently.
I bought a YT9B-BS as a replacement.
We shall see if this is the end of my issues.
I really should have checked this first, but at least I cleaned up some wiring and made a new air intake as well...
