I was planning to use some rubber sealing material intended for sealing greenhouse glass......

Most any upholstery shop has what you need. It is rubber trim frequently used on many things. It has an adhesive inside that works if heated with a heat gun as you install it.

... or google "rubber edge trim" - lots of stuff available.
