Toolbox restoToolbox restoI bought a rusty CL77 toolbox on ebay to try the electrolysis rust removal technique as described in the forum.
After a little fine tuning, it removed all of the rust and most of the old paint so that just a little stripper and elbow grease took care of it. Attached are some pics, I forgot to take a before but I'm really happy with the after, now all I need is a tool kit to go with it. With that experience under my belt, I'm going to gather up a few parts to try the zinc plating process next. Thanks, that was a fun project.
Not sure why an automatic charger would cause a problem, I ran it for 36 hours on the 2 amp setting and didn't do anything else except clean and reset the rebars once after 24 hours. Running like that it removed all the rust and 75% of the paint. I tried running it on the 10 amp setting to see if that would get the last of the paint but the connections were getting hot after about an hour so I called it good enough. LSU just beat Ole Miss!!!!!!!!!! I think some automatic chargers sense a fault condition in the battery and automatically shut off if they detect a problem.
Our shop charger would not charge a battery that was down below 5 volts or so unless you "tricked" it by crossing it with a good battery in parallel to get it started. I tried a Battery Tender, and 2 different variable rate automatic chargers and could't get a single bubble on any setting. Finally found an old manual 2A charger and the solution started bubbling right away. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
