How To Ask Questions
The kind of answers you get to your questions depends as much on the way you ask the questions. Readers actually like answering questions. If we didn't, we wouldn't be here.
Take time to read posts in each area and explore the web site. You will find a wealth of information here, and you may better understand the personalities of the people who frequent the message board.
Before You Ask
- Try to find an answer by reading the FAQs.
- Try to find an answer by searching the forum.
- Prepare your question. Think it through. Hasty-sounding questions get hasty answers or none at all.
- Include a picture if it applies.
- Update your profile and include your location. It helps others to know how to respond if we know your State, Provence, etc. or Country.
Frequent readers get tired of answering the same questions. If you make a good attempt at searching for your answer, you may find it. If you don't find it, you know you have a good question that is likely to get a reply.
When You Ask
- Choose the best forum for your question.
- Use meaningful, specific subject headers. The subject header is your golden opportunity to attract qualified experts' attention. Don't waste it on headers like 'Please help me', or 'How do I...'. Make your subject line reflect your question well enough that the next guy searching the forum with a question similar to yours will be able to find it.
- Write your question clearly using proper sentences and punctuation. Spend the extra effort to polish your language. It doesn't have to be stiff or formal.
- Don't TYPE IN ALL CAPS; this is read as shouting and considered rude.
- Be precise and informative about your problem
•Describe the symptoms of your problem carefully and clearly.
•Describe the research you did to try and solve the problem before you asked the question.
•Describe the diagnostic steps you took to try and pin down the problem yourself before you asked the question.
- Attach a photo of the problem area if applicable.
Follow up
Send a note after the problem has been solved to all who helped you. Let them know how it came out and thank them again for their help. This sort of follow up helps everybody who assisted feel a satisfying sense of closure about the problem.
If you solved the problem using Private Messages (PMs) or phone calls, please post a short follow up on how you solved the problems so others with the same problem may benefit.
