My "new" Dream...

Post by rzgkane » Mon Feb 13, 2012 8:08 pm

Any comments are welcome. This was supposed to be an "original" 1965 but evidence is telling me it's a 1965 frame with a 1963 or so engine and handlebars. Clutch cable is at a 45 degree angle to the case and the throttle seems to be what you veterans are calling a "twist throttle?"

Anything else look not correct? Missing air cleaner? Rectifier? Horn ok? Please comment.

You can look at all the pics by just clicking rzgkane under any photo.

What do I see in this pic?

Can someone tell me exactly what I'm looking at here? The white contraption is obviously the coil. The doohicky on the left is the Radio Shack rectifier. What is the black grenade?

There is only one thing I would do with that bike. Ride it.

Black grenade=starter relay
Definitely not a stock throttle.
Rectifier is as you say, Radio shack. Which is cool because those work way better than stock.
Air cleaner is not stock but it's cool. I have one of those foam ones on my Dream and it works great.
The horn looks ok.
The bolt for the front brake lever needs a nut on the bottom (not super crucial but should be there to lock it into place)
It would be worth it for you to take the right side cover off and reposition the kick starter to the 11 o'clock position as to not damage the splines when using the kick starter.
Definitely is an early clutch cable setup (which looks like it could use some adjustment judging by the lever adjuster).
I really can't say much about matching serial numbers to production years but there is some info on here. Post the serial number of the frame (left side by the engine mount I believe) and someone here will surely give you some more info about the year of the frame and engine.
That right side cover has the slot for the clutch cable so that may also be an earlier one (unless that's a modification).
That's an awesome looking Dream dude. Those mufflers look great too.

Thanks. I'm a battery, a fuel line (the clear one that runs from one side of the tank to the other and is hard as a freaking rock) and a couple hours away from riding it. What exactly does that fuel line do? I am guessing it's some type of vent?

Tell me more about the positioning of the kick starter. How would it damage splines from the position it is in? What position do you feel it is in now? 11:30 ish? I am new to all this and welcome any, and I mean any, advice.

Is the clutch cable only adjustable using the wheel at the clutch lever or is there something I can adjust inside the case? If the former, it looks to me like the clutch cable is stretched and could use replacement.

Frame number is CA781004xxx. I know this is a '65 frame. The uncertainty is with the engine number of CA77E-315562.

Bill Silver told me that the earlier throttle setups (like what is apparently on my bike) works better than the later editions when they ran the cable through the frame. You folks agree? In what way did the later ones not perform up to par?

I forgot to post this pic. It seems I also need a pair of those oh so special JIS chrome nuts?

Clutch adjustment

Post by conbs » Mon Feb 13, 2012 11:46 pm

Kane,

The gray plug looking thing right in front of your kick start shaft is a clutch adjustment. Do a search and you will find how to adjust it.

The line that connects the two sides of the tank allows the gas in both sides of the tank to equalize so that the petcock side doesn't empty out and leave gas in the other side.

You will find a wealth of knowledge using the search function. It is time consuming, but well worth it.

I don't know if I can say that it is settled without question, but I am pretty well convinced that if you have a CA77 frame your badges should say "Dream 300" and if you have a CA78 your badges should say "300". Not to worry, your bike is a pretty one even if not original and the "Dream 300" badges look great on it.
