Hi nation;

I know on my 1964 and '62 Dreams all you have to do is take off the side cover and pop the filter out of it's hole, wggling it out from under the oil drive chain

Take off the retaining ring holding the bottom of the filter on.

Take out the tubular center passageway.

Take out/tap out the bottom of the filter, and clean it out. Yes, it does come out...It's a centrifigal filter, so there will not be a filter in there per se'.

There is also an O-ring in there, too; keep an eye out for that.

Put it back in the way you took it out.

I'd just yank the whole thing out, you can loop the chain back over it with a bent wire when you put it back in. The cover is almost impossible to get off without hitting it from behind with a WOODEN dowel which you can't do until it's on your bench. Note the o-ring under the cap. When you put the unit back in, just hold the chain up with the wire and hold the filter by the shaft next to the crankshaft. You will be able to loop the chain around once you get the right bend in the wire etc. Then stretch the chain and push the shaft into its hole in the crankcase. Its all about the technique... And make sure you put the washer on the shaft before the filter. It goes between the little pin and the filter, NOT between the filter and crankcase. And make sure the little pin in the end of the shaft is sticking straight up before you try to put the cover back on.

I like the Chop Sticks option :) Seems quite appropriate!

Unlike metal the wood allows ya to lift and move the chain. ..........lm
