Mufflers, Mufflers, Mufflers

Post by Muddy » Sun Jun 19, 2011 6:24 am

G'day

Has anybody tried fitting other early model standard Honda mufflers to a C72/CA72? The Benly and CB77 (plus little later mufflers) look very similar? Do they fit with little modification? I'd expect that brackets may be different and require a little relocation plus re-chroming, but my main question is any significant non-alignment or mis fit?

Hope you can help.
Thanks.

Regards

Muddy

Hi Muddy

I believe, although I don't know, that Benly pipes are smaller diameter so making those fit will be difficult.

CB72 / 77 pipes are the same pipe diameter but the mufflers are probably harder to find than Dream mufflers and quite a lot of change will be required to brackets.

There are some 'universal' replica mufflers on ebay (look like early BMW mufflers) that look pretty good on both Dream and CB77.

Here's a pic of the above style mounted on my CA77:

They are about as close to original shape/style you can get in an aftermarket.

They are pretty restrictive so I ended up poking a couple holes in the baffles to open them up slightly.

They are not slotted on the inlet end to clamp tight on the header, so you will need to make your own slots and add a clamp or seal with some sealer if you want a leak free connection.

Brewsky

Thanks for showing the pictures. They look pretty good on the bike. What's the quality like? They're pretty cheap compared with hunting down originals.

The quality is fair. You can see the weld seams up close, and they came with a small ding in one pipe from the vendor. Had to tweak one mount that didn't line up exactly.

But, they have been in use for a couple years or so now, and no rust or other issues yet.

Most people, other than 305 purists, think they are original, and for $100, they are what I expected.

I do like the shape on the Dream.

Ca77 dream mufflers on eBay

Post by Valsigplym » Fri Mar 22, 2013 4:19 pm

Brewsky,
Do you remember which seller on ebay you purchased your mufflers from? I am going to get some from thailand and there are a few sellers to choose from now.
