Engine will not turn over. Help!

Post by Rookie305 » Thu Apr 06, 2006 4:43 pm

I have a Dream 305, and I have replaced many parts and cannot get the starter or engine to turn over in the number 3 key position. I was hoping someone had any thoughts. Here is a list of what I have replaced so far.
-starter
-starter soelnoid
-spark plugs (gapped correctly)
-points (gapped correctly)
-battery
-coil is good
In the number one key position (to prime the motor) the starter turns over fine with the start button. I am only trying to get it to turn over with the start button, not the kick start because the rod is stripped. But in the number three position to start the bike, nothing happens at all when I try to start it. The bike has no response. The starter doesn't move at all or anything for that matter. I do not have the gas tank on or have gas in the carb. All I am trying to do now is trying to see if the engine turns over and is in working condition. I am not trying to have this run yet. Most of the bike is torn down. So my question is why the starter works in the number 1 key position but not in the number 3 (start, run) key position. I have also tried all of the other key positions too and no response. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Rookie

305 starting

Well, you know you have a good starter and starter button are o.k.. Also, you know your solenoid is operating since you have power to the starter.I assume you do not have a wiring diagram?Your switch contacts may be corrodsed from not being used for may years. You could try and move it back and forth a number of times to try and get off the corrosion.I would check all connections inside headlight bucket to ignition switch. They could be corroded and or not connected, be careful pulling them apart. Also, check all connections by rectifier and coil.

Yes the starter and buttons are ok and working. It works in one position to prime but not the position to start and run the bike. I cleaned the contacts, they look good. I do have the starter button apart and use a ground (handlebars) to start in the number one key position. I had also taken the wiring apart at the connections and had those cleaned, even though they were not very corroded at all. I do have a wiring diagram. The only wire that was not and is not connected is a wire to the headlight itself. So I am still baffled.

ignition switch

Post by joeweir1 » Fri Apr 07, 2006 2:58 pm

When you say you cleaned the contacts I'm assuming you took the ignition switch apart, is it correctly put back together?. Did it look like it had been apart before? The key should only be able to be removed in the #2 and # 5 positions.Does the parking light come on in the #5 position. Does the headlight and tail light come on in the #4 position? If you do not have the bulbs in check for voltage at the wires for the bulbs.Sounds strange. If it turns over in the prime position it should work in the start position.

Try this! Take switch loose and have hanging outside the headlight bucket. Take a jumper wire and put jumper from the battery and start terminals on back of switch( don't worry what position the key is in since your bypassing the insides of the switch anyway.. You can read the letters on back(ST) and (BAT)there are two BAT terminals, either one can be used. Then try the start button.I did this before I had a key to start my project bike.If it turns over I'd say your switch is bad inside.Do you have an ohmmeter? I have a spare ignition switch here on my lap.Check switch this way also, touch one meter lead to ST and then one to IGN. in the number #3 position, you should have continuity. Then leave meter wire on the ST terminal and touch the lead on the BAT terminal it should also have continuity in the #3 position. You will only have continuity from ST to the IGN in the #3 position to get your spark.Hope that's not confusing? It's pretty simple way to check. Get back to us to help and lets us know what you found.Joe

I finally got my baby to start! I checked the back of the ignition switch like you said. Everything checked out to be ok. So I fiddled around with the key in each position. I finally got it to work in the number 3 key position. The problem was that it did not turn over or do anything all the way in that key position. I only got it to work just barely out of the number 3 key position. So it was kind of inbetween #2 and #3 key positions. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

What are you trying to say? Are you willing to sell me the extra one you have? How much?
