Odd frame VIN

Post by djohns » Fri Mar 24, 2023 4:33 pm

Buddy of mine has a frame with the following VIN. Does not look altered. Any insights ?
C72-64-4nnnnn. Looking for a C72 engine or at least a genuine top crankcase stamped C72E

Based on what I've seen with other VINs of the period, this is going to be a 1964 model year.

Thanks for the reply. First I’ve seen, in my limited experience, of a year number outside of the 5/6/7 number VIN stream. Unique to certain “C” models vs “CA” we see here? Trying to expand knowledge.

Based on the Survey entries received so far (several hundred), at least for the CB/CL/CA bikes, the model year prefixes seem to *end* with 1964, and also, sometimes in 1964 the serial sequence goes to a multi digit number instead (and no model year prefix) and that format continues through the series end. I've never seen a model year prefix of "65" or later.

That said, as more entries are collected, some other pattern might turn up.

Tell everyone - we need many more survey entries!!!
