Electronic Ignition Pops

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Wed Apr 26, 2017 3:26 pm

Well, I knew I'd be back...:)

This is kind of a continuation of the 'Carb Won't Fill' post, which I solved after I replaced the carb needles etc with a new kit, the right one: Keyster KH-1316.

So I now have fuel flow to the carb, but I also put on a Tytronic electronic ignition in the hopes it would improve performance.

Timing is set to the "F" mark; I filled up the carb, put a fresh battery on her and cranked her over, but no joy. Very strong crank, nice compression (125 per cylinder), but NO SPARK! RRRrrrrrrr........

But here's the thing: yes, I pulled the plugs and tested them against head, and saw no spark;
Now I know the Dreams have a wonky ignition switch, with, like, 5 different settings...I clicked through the settings - I brought it up to the top one - and it backfired!

Did it again - cranked it over, no luck, clicked through the ignition settings, and BLAM! The right muffler shot about 5 inches of flame out of and made me jump.

Carburetor is set to 1 1/4 turns out on the fuel screw, and the same on the airscrew, which is the kind that does NOT get an o-ring - at least from everything I've read here...

It has a new 12-volt coil...the Radio Shack rectifier mod...new spark wires and caps...???

I'm going to go back over the ignition settings on the crank, to make sure I have it set right - but the Dream is a wasted spark system, right? Only one cylinder fires at a time...? And usually the engine fires when the points just begin to open, although in this case there are no points, or condenser - just the Tytronic electronic ignition...

But the weird thing is, is Why would I get a backfire with no spark, especially just by clicking through the ignition settings? ( I also hope I didn't hurt the engine...sound like a shotgun!)

Backfiring is a sign of a lean condition...should I open up the fuel screw a bit more? Close it? And what good will that do me if I can't See a decent spark? Is there one there? And Why would it "fire" when I clicked through the ignition switch?

So far have you checked the unit for 12 volts in the position you try to start the engine?. ................lm

Checked the unit? You mean the coil? Or do you mean am I getting 12 volts to the electronic ignition?

No, neither - not yet, anyway; but good point... how would I do that - just check across the connectors from the wiring harness to the elec. ignition wires, or from the coil?

...and if that comes up no good, what then? Or indeed, if it DOES come up positive, what does that mean? Spark wires?

If you have a schematic showing were the wires go use it and check battery to the new part. ......................lm
