I will check my parts stash of speedos this weekend and see if any of them survived me messing with them.

Looks like they all seem to be in pretty bad shape. GL

Speedometer repair

Post by conbs » Fri May 08, 2015 5:04 pm

That tab needs to be on the other side of the stop. That should be where the needle returns to zero and the stop holds it there. As you speed up the top cup starts to move against the spring and the needle moves clockwise.

There are three lube points that need attention. 1. The brass bushing right under where the needle mounts on the top shaft; 2. The bottom bushing where the speedo cable comes in; 3. the top shaft comes to a point down in between the two cups and sits in a bushing that mounts in the bottom cup. That is most likely where your problem is and what ruined the spring. To get at it will require further disassembly of the speedo unit. You could try putting some oil down around the top cup so it will run down in the bottom cup to lube that third point. But, if there is dirt or corrosion down in there it will probably fail again before long. it needs to move very smoothly. Any binding at that point will make the speedometer needle try to spin around at the same rpm's as the speedo cable. That ruins the spring.

I hope that helps
