Thanks for the clues. I haven't checked on that, but the ignition coil's contacts are super rusty and the whole thing looks very worn. The battery read around 11.7 on the volt meter.

COIL
Been my experience that it's very difficult to try to kick start and watch for spark at the same time. Same with trying to start a lawnmower and watch for spark. Better to have an assistant watch while you kick.
N; the coil is the least likely suspect here. they rarely go bad. check/clean the battery/engine grounds. when checking for spark, first clean and set points correctly, confirm 12v at points. then, have NEW plug. then trim back the plug wires 1/4". still no spark? pull the cap and check with bare wire. go?/no go? change the plug wires.(solid core only). It's normal for a coil to warm up if you are repeatedly trying to start something and It's not running.
