hoping for a little helpEMO Tuning RecipeLook to the left in the yellow bar. Under FAQ you will find the How do I tune... link. Its a little different on a Dream (unless it is a Type I after all) because there is only one set of points, etc., but you will get the idea. Have you gapped points before?
Too bad about the smoke, but don't assume all is lost. In another thread someone talked about getting stuck rings "unstuck" by putting a little Marvel Mystery oil in the gas and oil. It couldn't hurt to try it and might be a cheap and easy way to get down the road. That assumes you will be riding this bike for pleasure and not need it for daily riding. Speaking of pleasure.... Taking your bike apart with the idea that you are going to paint it will be no pleasure at all. It is a lot of work. I am not saying you shouldn't do it, but just know that many such projects start with the best intentions and end up being sold as a basket case because the owner just looses the "fire" to finish the job. There are a couple on e-bay right now. A couple of years ago my daughter bought me a book on restoring cars (for a Mustang project that has been waiting many years). The author's advice was that no matter what condition your rig is in, DON'T take it all apart. It just becomes too overwhelming. Start with small jobs so that your success will buoy you up enough to take on the next task. Eventually, to paint it you will have to take it all apart. In the mean time, if you take the tank off, clean everything and polish the chrome. Maybe even paint the tank in the color you will be painting the rest of the bike (it doesn't look like you will hurt the looks of the bike any). Get new badges and rebuild the petcock. New hoses. (Rust inside?) You will find getting the tank to that point will be a lot of work. But, it will also be satisfying. And, there is nothing like riding your bike now and then to give you enthusiasm for continuing the effort. Next, try something like cleaning and polishing up mufflers and headers. Detailing all of the bolts, etc., will take more time than you expect. Ride more. When you are ready to paint the bike you will have a lot of work behind you. It is a lot different being able to strip the bike, paint it and then put everything back on rather than taking everything off, having the whole bike in a pile and having to detail every part before you would dare put it back on that shiney, newly painted bike. You might want to start a restoration thread. Include a picture of your aunt. Okay, you get the idea. I realize I have injected myself a long ways into your situation and you did not ask for my opinion. I just don't want to see your aunt's bike on e-bay in a couple of years as another failed project, or worse being sold as parts. I bet she wouldn't want that either. Hope this is helpful to you and others. If it's running, I would set the points to.014" then use a timing light. That way, you can check the advance too.
Looks like a '64 with the upper case (and maybe the lower too) replaced with a CL77 (Scrambler) case from a later model. That should be OK if whoever did it did some research on the differences between CL and CA cases - they do have different part numbers but probably nothing of significance. Not that hard to rebuild the top end if you need to. Hopefully, you already have an Ohio title with the frame number. Our BMV is among the most thorough in the galaxy, even for 50 year-old-iron. -48 conbs - thanks for the advice. i agreee whole heartedly about not tearing it all apart at one time. i am notorious for not finishing projects any where near as quickly as intended... if at all. I'm hoping this winter to get the engine in good shape as I do plan to ride the bike as a daily driver (I live within 1.5 miles of both my jobs so its not a lot of miles).
I think i will start a resto thread. 48 - dont have title in hand yet, but just waiting on probate court and lawyers for the estate to do their thing. Re: EMO Tuning RecipeThere is a group of product that are only available to professional by a company called B&G. They specialize in things like fuel injection cleaning, engine decarboning, tranny flushes, etc.. I thought it was just more snakeoil but it's not. I just dug a leaf blower out of a dumpster that was like new. The ring was stuck from using old gas and cheap oil (2-stroke). It was stuck so hard that no amount of picking and prodding could get it loose. So, I gave it to a friend how dropped it in a can of B&G top end cleaner he had open. A day later the ring fell out of the groove. If you have friends in the business, ask them if they use B&G products and see if you cannot get a can of their top end cleaner. I did a Durango a few years ago that could not go up a hill without pinging all the way and the B&G took all the carbon out and problem went away. regards, Rob
