I've learned to bypass the wiring harness completely- rig a toggle switch to the solenoid, use the existing cable to the starter, new wire from the battery to the coils, and it should go. It's been a while, but I think I just leave the alternator/regulator/rectifier completely out and ran from the battery, but there's a chance the regulator or rectifier may need to have some sort of load. The idea is to start with the very minimum required to get the thing to fire. Once it's running you can add things and see where the system fails.
The corroded rats nest in the headlight shell, brittle insulation, inevitable poor repairs, etc, are just too many variables for me to solve simultaneously.
Look at the diagram and don't trust my memory, but I think you can get one of these things running with only a few wires.

Steve, I already printed off your colour wiring diagram. Thanks for that and I just printed your Combination switch matrix. Invaluable as I think I have the 6 position switch. I'll check later. I've begun tracing my voltage back from the battery and I get 12 volts after the fuse but I seem to lose it somewhere after that. I have to step away from the bike until next week though as I am heading to California Wednesday to do some hiking around Yosemite and Inyo National Parks. I need a break... Jeff.

Note to all: the sticky that I posted in 'Electrical - Wiring' showing the C/CA combi switch matrix has been corrected. The starter solenoid (magnetic switch) coil is supplied with 12V via the combi switch in both 'prime' and 'ignition' positions. My matrix originally showed it as being supplied 12V in only the 'prime' position.
Please download and print the revised drawing.
