Nut Plate for Electronics Cover?

I almost lost the right side electronics cover on my 1967 CA77 on my last ride. The attaching knob had come completely loose. It appears the nut plate that the knob screws into has fallen off. Does anyone know of an easy way to replace the nut plate or other fix so I can attach the cover?

Take off the plate and use a helicoil in the hole…? Screw the knob right into the helicoiled hole in the frame...? Just an idea...
