Dianne, they didn't stop those designs and they didn't go out of business, buy a CB400f and quadruple your pain. :) a lot is down to age hardened rubber.

Wintergreen oil softens old rubber.

It isn't that the rubber is hard. It is very difficult to get one or two fingers in there so manipulating the rubber tube over the air intake on the carb is one hellofa PITA!

Yes that is what I used the second time, reproduction plenum chamber rubbers are now available.
