How many CA78 were built?

Post by DAX6 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:00 am

I ' am a Dutchman and since a long time I have got A Honda Dream CA78 ,vin 101633,engine CA77E number 1016498.
This machine was imported from the States to Holland.(california)
There is some confusion between the CA77 and CA78.
Very few is known about the CA78.
I have got a very big collection of Honda 's(85), the biggest and finest collection of the Netherlands, people say. It 's the only white one in Europe of this type.
So, who can help me ???
dearest greetings

Difference between CA77 and CA78

Post by conbs » Fri Mar 30, 2012 4:18 pm

Herman,

Honda made the transition from the CA77 to the CA78 model in 1963. But, the Honda literature refers to 305 Dreams as "CA77" after that in all but a few places. In reality, there are many more CA78 than there are CA77. I believe the same is probably true for C77 and C78, but have not documented that. While the frame numbers changed, all export 305 Dreams have "CA77E" engine numbers.

I am not aware that anyone has fully vetted the differences between CA77 and CA78, but here are a few of the differences I have found with alot of help from Bill Silver (whom I have bugged quite a bit) as well as help from owners of 1963 Dreams who have helped with pictures for documentation.

For most of the changes, think "early" vs "late" parts. The changed parts include the tank, handle bars and controls, "luggage supports" (aluminum brackets on the side of the rear fender), headlight bucket adding "Honda" emblem under the headlight and seat.

I hope this helps.
