Re: Rebuild?

"For the few miles we got to spend together, I was a happy gal.'

Likely there aren't that many things in life about which you can say that. Why would you get rid of the bike?

The quickest way to become "happy" again is by buying a good running motor so you can ride the bike. The problem is knowing what the real condition is of the used motor you might purchase. It probably comes down to simple trust in the person you buy it from. Any Forum members in your area with a running motor? You could have a motor back on the bike in an hour or so. All of this is a little bit of a crap shoot, but if you get it running again you will be happy and solve your storage problem. But, you DO have to get a motor that runs well. Perhaps the seller could get it started for you before you purchase.

Sounds like you have some concerns about time and expense of rebuilding. This is probably the only other path besides selling the bike.

For simplicity, you will need another Dream motor.

More input! I love it, thanks very much.

Funny, I really haven't considered selling it! Maybe were I sane, that would be the first thought, but it didn't cross my mind. I consider it a pretty permanent part of the stable - I guess I'd sell it if I came across a barn find Dream or Superhawk in good original shape, but I'm not looking and I don't expect to just stumble across anything like that.

I think what I'm working with here is wondering if I should:

a) spend a mint in parts, then either find the time to rebuild or pay someone to rebuild;

b) hope to find a plug and play running motor; or

c) look for a spare motor or parts bike of known or unknown provenance, and hope there are enough usable parts on it so as to ultimately reduce the amount of time I'll spend sourcing parts, and maybe even end up spending a little less.

I guess that for a) or c), the first thing I need to do is take a reasonable inventory of what I need. For b) I suppose I should just start looking. See, saying it that way, b) sounds most appealing (just in terms of getting the thing done), but as has been said before....you really don't know unless you buy from a source you have reason to trust.

My main consideration at this point is trying to wrap my head around the fact that I've already spent far more than I would have spent had I bought something that ran well - and trying not to overspend on the project to ridiculous proportions. Although if I were smart, my main consideration would be how to get it running in the quickest period of time with the minimum damage to my sanity.

I like the idea of putting it away until I have more headspace, but unfortunately, I have a number of projects in that status right now. This is the only one that needs any significant work that is presently on the, errr, front burner. (there are three that all need "just one thing" at the moment). I'm afraid that if I let it get too far away I might not end up getting back to it within a reasonable amount of time.

Engine in Ontario

Post by conbs » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:32 pm

Jimpapa, what the heck was that motor on? Purpose built, exhaust is kind cool, but..... Go-Kart? So, I wonder why it was taken out of service in its prior life?

Susan, this is a great example of your quest. As the TV commercial says, "You don't have to know [exactly] what you're looking for; you just have to start looking." And you might find this. Hard to say what shape it is in, but you probably should try to find out. Too, bad a lot of the engine parts on ebay are from pretty good engines that are only disassembled to try and make a buck. The real problem is a complete engine like this weighs so much it is expensive to ship. That makes a complete engine like this sort of rare because everyone is leary about taking a chance on whether the motor is good or not. If it turns out to be a good runner, $305 would be a lot cheaper than a rebuild and would get you back on the road. A little like going to Vegas, except I think your odds would be a lot better. The ante is high, though.

Anyone on this Forum have a complete engine to offer up for Susan's consideration?

I found a potential candidate. Bike doesn't run, but has extremely low original miles if the seller is to be believed.

Q: how compatible would a CA78 motor be with my CA77?

305 motor

Post by conbs » Mon Jan 09, 2012 12:37 pm

All engines on CA77 and CA78 are CA77E XXXXXX engines. There were some running changes in internal parts throughout production, but if you have a complete motor, it should bolt up and work great.

The right side cover may have a different location where the cable comes into it might take a different clutch cable, but I am pretty sure you could just change the side cover and use the old cable. I think everything else will work without issue.

What year is your bike?

Thanks much - I appreciate the information.

Mine is a '66 as per the title (I haven't tried to verify the VIN to confirm this).
