PETCOCK SCREWS/BOLTS

Post by FAST FRED » Fri Aug 19, 2011 11:41 pm

I have read many times about CA owners rebuilding their petcocks with varying results. The rebuild kits are available but the three 5x25mm JIS screws that hold it to the tank are hard to find at best. Has anybody ever tried to replace the screws with 5x25 JIS bolts with any luck? Is there enough room inside the petcock for the 7mm heads?

I had some major problems with my petcock on my rebuild. The original screws were rusted in so badly that I had to drill them out and install helicoils in all three. Even at that the new screws I used were just slightly too large diameter on the screw head. So I had to grind them down on a bench grinder. So in answer to your question, I think using bolts would work well but you would most likely have to grind the heads down to a smaller diameter and perhaps slot them with a dremel or something like that.
