pistons

Post by rustywrench » Thu May 06, 2010 9:34 am

I've read volumes of info here and filed away a lot of it for future use and not once did I catalog where I found it. So rather than spend a lot of time searching and reading, I set my fresh engine up to illustrate how it was done. The only problem was the foot of the puller kept sliding off the piston top. You can actually put enough pressure on a piston with this thing to snap the ring off the top of the sleeve and drive the sleeve through the block. I've even gone to extremes and wrapped a chain around the block, suspended the whole thing from a rafter with the weight of it all hanging on the pistons and drove the pistons down with a 1 3/8 impact socket and hammer. I'm not always the most patient wrench in the box but by God it came apart and I could deal with the aftermath afterwards. It did come apart BTW. Hope the pic helps Ya,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,RW

Great techniques and pics there. I just have two worries.

1) should probably attach the 'puller' to more than two studs to avoid pulling them out of the crankcase
2) if the pistons are at BDC / TDC as mine were then you ought to remove the lower crankcase as there is nowhere for the crank to go (it cannot rotate) so you will just be trying to push the crank out of the bottom!

Other than that - perfect!

John,
No matter what happens here on your project, if you do loose a cylinder to too much pressure, I've got your back. I have an extra block that would have to be bored out but I can let ya have it cheap. So worse case, PM me and we'll set it up. Good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,RW

Hi guys;

Thanks everybody for the great input and photos; I believe my pstons are, or appear to be (of Course! ) at BDC, so yes, that's going to make it a lot more interesting...I was thinking that, since it seems I'm going to be splitting the cases anyway, I was going to attack the problem from below...essentially take the engine apart Around the pistons and eventually leave myself with just the cylinder head and pistons hanging in it; might make it easier to press out, but believe me, I'll probably try everything you guys mentioned first...I have the type of engine that both pistons move in unison, so that makes it all the more fun, so to speak...either way, I believe it will be a buckin' fitch...

Rusty, thanks for the offer of the block; I will let you know...so when I pull out my can of Whoopass on it and engage in aggressive negotiations with it, it's nice to know there's a back-up...

G-man, yes, that is Fuuug-LY!

Flathead, yes, mine were in similar crappiness, btu not quite as bad; the PO had dumped a whole lot of Mystery Oil in there, I guess to try to free them up, but no good. So they sat for God knows how long, collecting dust and solidifying. They look much cleanr(althugh just as stuck) now...I have them soaking in PB Blaster, but somebody mentioned Kroil, and one of my friends said to try diesel fuel - just let it sit for a week or two and see what happens.

I'll try to post pics of what I have, but give me some time; there's a buncha stuff going on around here today, Mothers Day this weekend, wifely concerns, etc...

Thanks guys! I'll definitely keep you in the loop!

-John
