How to stop side cover scratches

Post by bj » Sat Oct 25, 2008 11:31 pm

I am just finishing up the bulk of a restore. I was wondering about the side covers. It seems that since they have metal to metal contact with the frame, they will eventually rub paint off.

I was thinking that a really heavy gauge, clear plastic tape or something like that would help.

Anyone know where I could pick something like this up or any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Bryan

After more closely looking at the covers, I realized that the battery side is pretty easy. I just put some little rubber drawer type stoppers on the 2 tabs at the top of the cover. Works great.

The other side is another story. It looks like it originally had a strip of rubber in the channel at the top of the cover to keep water out. The rubber strip is not listed on the parts fiche.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,

Bryan

Don't they have a couple holes for rubber bumpers to push in through?

Yes, on the battery side there are holes for stoppers. But not on the other side. It requires some sort of rubber strip. I haven't found one yet.

Frame Side Covers

Bryan, I restored a Dream and came across the same problem. You are right, the Dream had a rubber strip that was stock on one side, and two bumpers on the other.
I thought real hard, and came up with using windshield wiper blades. You can use the part that slides over the metal lip and superglue it to the side case. Just trim it down the length for unwanted excess. This works good for both sides because the little rubber bumpers just bend when you tighten them up anyway.
I hope this helps you. Matt

Thanks!

I knew someone had come across this before. I'll give it a try.

A length of rubber screenwasher tube, from a BMW/MINI parts bin, slit open with a pair of sharp scissors & glued in place. I'd probably avoid cyanoacrylate Super Glue unless it's the gel; it could ruin the paint if it runs!
