Engine Serial Numbers

Post by FreeRadical » Sun Aug 12, 2018 7:45 am

Hello everyone. I'm in the process of a full restore and just discovered the lower crankcase on my 1966 CL77 has a huge 3" x 2" hole near the edge where it meets the side cover. The frame serial number on my bike is 1026593. Are there any serial number guidelines I should be aware of when before purchasing a replacement case? For instance, are there serial numbers for early model CL77s versus late model CL77s? Thanks!!!

CL77 engines are marked CL77E- while CL72 engines are marked CL72E- you probably won't find a CL72 case up in that range

You should be able to use any post '62 lower case from a CA,CB or CL with your upper case. Early bikes ('61 and '62) did not have the mount for a primary chain tensioner and very early cases had a different-sized left-hand crank bearing.
