new to 305 scramblers splitting engine case

i just picked up a 1965 305 scrambler and I'm going to go through the whole bike. right now I'm trying to split the engine case to look at the transmission gears, and i can not get them apart,any tips or trick??

Make sure that you have removed the two nuts on the top of the crankcase that are located under the metal tab that the valley cover attaches to. Those get overlooked quite often.

thank you pemdoc65 once i took those off it came right apart.
my next question is I'm looking to replace all the seals and i haven't found a gasket for the engine case halves?? is there one or is it just silicone? [/quote]
