Need Help with Bike ID!

Hi all,

Earlier today I made a similar post on the "Honda: Early Models" board, but just realized I probably should've posted it here instead. I'm new to the forum as you can tell, and I'm hoping you guys can help me pin down the details on this bike. Long story short, the guy in the photo is my dad, who has long-since passed on and is no longer around to help me get to the bottom of this. The photo was supposedly taken in June of 1967. After an extended break I've recently gotten back into bikes and would like to start a project restoring one like this. Obviously the first step is figuring out what it is :) I've spent a lot of time online trying to match up this bike with images of ones from the internet, and can't seem to match everything up, especially the proportions/configuration of the rear fender and seat/taillight bracket. A mechanic at a local bike shop suggested it was a 1964 or 1965 CL77 305 Scrambler. However, I was also finding some photos online of 1963 CL72s that were looking pretty similar. If it would help I could PM the photo with higher resolution, but had to re-size this photo to fit under the forum posting size threshold. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
It's difficult to say which model you have there without seeing the eng# or serial number. This bike has been modified enough and the differences are slight. The closest you may get is early cl77 or cl72. If you find one, go with that. good luck, Rusty

If you would look on the left side of the steering stem, you will probably see the frame number, additionally, look on the left side of the engine right down on the inside of the exhaust system on top of the engine case, there should be a number there also. Don't worry if the numbers don't match, they very seldom do. When you get those numbers, post them and there are very knowledgeable individuals on here that will help you identify what you have. Additionally, look on the cylinder head, at the lower part, in the front, if there is a 305cc stamped or raised, then you probably have a 305 CL77. You might also want to take the seat off and look at the wiring harness, there is usually a white tag attached to the wiring harness, if there is, and you can read it, it will give you an idication of what year the bike was made.

You won't find a bike that looks just like this one because it's been modified over its life.

Front fender has been removed and it looks like the rear fender has been shortened. Seat has either been shortened or changed completely.

The tank has had the badges removed and the place where they mounted filled in and the tank repainted. The steel fork sliders and the small front brake says it is an early model so could be a CL72 (250cc) or early CL77 (305cc).

It looks like the straight exhausts are longer than they would be for a bike with the muffler removed. I believe, and the experts can confirm, this would make it a CL72. I'm not sure if the CL77 ever came with straight pipes.

Because it has been modified, you have a better chance at finding a less than perfect bike with which to recreate this bike. If you buy a bike and the tank is not modifed, I would suggest you put the good tank away properly and buy a modified tank on ebay. You see them with missing brackects/badges go for less money than an original config.

Thanks for all the info, guys. I really appreciate folks taking the time to weigh in. Unfortunately I only have the one photo, so I'm forced to work from that only. Sounds like I'll need to really consider whether my goal is to re-create the look of this (apparently heavily modded) bike, or if I want to attempt to restore one to a closer representation of stock. I'm obviously just beginning to wade in to the CL pool, but I've gotta say I'm really drawn to the stock/original look...
