I stratle the frame and lift to the right after I protect the pipes with golf club bag tubes.
I do this when the bike is assembled so I don't have to worry about the handle bars and other parts making the removable tough on them. ..lm

The bike was stripped down to just an engine and frame. I did as Dave suggested and removed the left exhaust studs and right cover, then laid it over on a matt on its right side as Rob suggested and lifted the frame up and off. It came right out first try.

Glad to hear the "place the bike on it's side" method works for this engine/frame combination. I started using that method for much bigger engines quite awhile ago because I rarely have help and if I do, it's the wife.
I like the golf club tube idea, LM. I've used pipe insulation in the past as protection but it can be breached by an errant stud or sharp corner. PVC pipe was considered, but never tried. Those golf tubes are pretty thin yet tough. I'm too young to golf so now I have an excuse to peruse the golf section of Dick's.

I used your method on a SOHC 4 750 once. Bike was down to motor and frame only and I was alone.
Me and the bike wrestled for quite a while on a large foam rubber pad, but I finally won!

I like a firm base, Brewsky. Usually a couple layers of cardboard (I tend to hoard appliance boxes) and a heavy wool blanket folded to provide two layers over that. Allows you to shim the engine with wood to keep it stable while you wrestle with the frame.
