CL77 front wheel hub rattle ??

Post by skychs » Wed Jul 20, 2016 2:29 pm

1967 CL77 305 Scrambler

I took the front wheel off, removed the tire and pulled off the brake and speedo assemblies. When I rotate the wheel by hand I hear what appears to be pebbles in the hub. The bearings and seal are still in place. Im a little concerned.

Any idea's?

noise

I just spoke to a guy in MD who specializes in CL77's. He said the noise is rust rolling around the outer rim of the wheel. He explained the way the wheels are made/designed and he said it is very common but not an issue unless you have a ton of rust with gaping holes.

I feel a little better.

If you don't like the noise, it can be fixed with very little effort. I had the same issue with mine when they came back from chroming. I drilled a very small hole in the outer rim and injected some epoxy (not a lot ) but just enough to coat the rust balls. When the epoxy dried, the rattle was gone.
