Greetings
I have a CL72 1964 with large rear sprocket (compared to CB77) which may or may not be standard.
I was considering running a 15 tooth front and a 32 back for better street performance. Has anyone run this or similar combination successfully
regards
Greg

Re: Road Gearing
I have 15 front and 33 rear on my CL77. I would not recommend this unless your running on flat open spaces. It's a bit too high geared when taking off from a stop and requires a down shift on moderate hills, although I can do 50 mph easily in 3rd gear. I'm leaning toward a 37 on the rear when I change it.Waveblaster wrote:Greetings

Remember when comparing the CB has on 18 inch wheel and the CL has a 19 inch. That will make a considerable difference in the final speed.

37 teeth on the rear is standard, pretty good all around gearing. It will go 50 mph, in second gear, with 16/37 gearing. These motors are happiest running at 6000-7000 rpm, when cruising down the highway. It won't go any faster in high gear if you lug the engine with high gears. Back in the late sixties I went on a three day, 1000 mile trip with some friends on my 305 scrambler. I had a 32 tooth sprocket mounted on the back wheel for the trip. I got the same gas mileage as one of my buddies riding a CL77 with standard gearing. He could pass cars at will, mine was a real pig for acceleration, I had to plan ahead just to safely get around slower traffic.
