They did the same thing with racers in the 60s. Some used dry sump early on but the fabulous six was wet sump, arguably the bike that needed most cooling but got it with those side-mounted coolers.
I think that the dry sump decision was often about uncertainty, when producing new designs. It's easier to make changes to an oil tank than an engine......

Dry Sumps
Everything said plus the fact, just another place for a leak although all my CBXes ran pretty dry with decent "O" rings finally in the oil lines. Now valve covers...........another thing unless properly sealed. Back in the day another trick was to coat the head gasket with Copper Coat aid in seaing the slight imperfections.
