So I got stranded today...for about 20 minutes

Was riding with the headlight on and had the rpm's sitting right around 3800rpm. About 7 minutes into the right the ignition went out. I remember reading not to run the headlight if below 4k but I didn't take it seriously. Got the bike restarted by kick starting it and rode back home with just the tail light on.

Can I run just the tail light at any rpm or do is there a minimum rpm I should run?

I wound't think the headlight would be a problem to begin with. Do you still have the original rectifier installed? Battery's good?

Bike was sitting for 38 years, so I suspect that's the same one. The battery is only a couple months old. It's the stock Yuasa. The starter wouldn't turn over the motor which is why I kick started it.

It's sitting right at 12 volts. Although I stuck it on the battery charger as soon as I got home and it's now fully charged.

I would definitely upgrade that rectifier. Just look through the electrical section or do a search for "radio shack rectifier" Works much better than the original.

Rectifier

Hi, I put a solid state rectifier on my CL77. got it from oregonmotorcycleparts.com...he makes them up to plug and play for various vintage honda's...I also have one on my 67 S90...I also put an LED tail light from super brite on the 305 trying to save the charging system as much as possible. with a new battery I have been riding it lots with no surprises. I recently put a battery tender Jr. on it since many of my friends swear by them. One of the members here, snakeoil I think, has been looking into creating an LED headlight application for his bike that would reduce the draw compared to the original headlight.
