Do the tapered steering kits replace the bearing races?Do the tapered steering kits replace the bearing races?Working on rebuilding a basket case, and I can't seem to find either the lower or upper fork stem bearing races (parts 53211-268-305 and 53212-250-305). In searching through the message board, it looks like people have been using tapered bearing kits when rebuilding the steering- if I go through this route, would I still need to order the races, or would a kit like this replace them?

Well all right then. I guess I'll need to rebuild the bearings with what's available. Can anyone tell me--if I have a flat spot in the straight ahead direction at 8300 miles on an early '64 Dream, would that tend to be the races having divots being worn into them, or the balls getting flat spots, or both? I'd like to order parts before I disassemble. If the balls are hard enough that they don't wear, but dig into the races, then I can keep the balls and replace the races. I imagine if the balls got flat spots on them, I'd feel a "detent" at some other places in the steering arc as well, but it's only at the straight ahead point that the detent exists, which suggests to me that the balls are harder than the races and have worn divots into the races. Hmmm.
