CB72 speedometer sizes.

Post by Rookhill » Tue May 24, 2011 1:32 pm

Hello Guys. Are the early speedos the same diameter as the later ones. Do they all fit the top yolk oval speedo mounts? Or are the top yolks different from year to year? You've guessed that the speedo I bought doesn't fit the top yolk on my '63 CB72!! Are yolks inter-changeable?
Thanks H.

Do you have pictures of what you have? Are you looking at an alloy fork top with the bracket built in or the one where the speedo fits in to the headlamp bucket direct. The top yoke with built in bracket was the early one.

Pretty sure all speedos are the same dimensions.

Hello G,
heres a link to the speedo and top mount.

I could be reading this wrong, I saw a picture of a cb without the headlight nacelle and an after market light. The speedo seemed to be mounted directly into the ali' oval. Is the speedo held by the ring or the nacelle or both?
You asked about the badges, I was lucky the bike sat in a barn untouched for nearly 35 years, the're the originals. Even got the buff log book 8155 TJ.

Not too familiar with these early brackets. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along soon. Is your speedo too big or too small for the ally bracket. On the biked where the speedo fits into the headlight bucket their is a metal loop with foam rubber attached which takes up the space between speedo and headlamp bucket.

I've done the sensible thing and bought a parts manual with diagrams. I see the rubber packing ring you were talking about G. It all makes sense now.
The only problem is I 've just aquired a CB72 top yolk thats come off an old "proddy" racer and looks nothing like the original and the road going speedo/tach definitely doesn't fit !

Let me know if you want to sell that top yoke with the loop. I may have a spare top yoke of the later type for you. I'm (slowly) building a racer so your early top yoke would be ideal.

Do you have the correct headlamp bucket now?
