t working but speedo not. any suggestions?

its a newer replacement but the needle wasnt moving. let me know if this is common and what should i look into. anything would help.

Broken inner speedo cable is pretty common. Disconnect it at the wheel and see if only half comes out.

Have you swapped it out for the later 'both clockwise' instrument? If so, and you previously had a contra-needle instrument then you'll need to change out the speedo drive on the front hub for the later type.

when i disconnect the cable theres a little plug like thing in the hole on the rim. it has the speedo where the tach goes clockwise and the speedo is counter.

The speedo drive on the front hub has a keyhole-shaped receptor.

• First, pull the inner cable out from the bottom and check that it's intact along its entire length.
  
  If so, re-insert it and ensure that there's about 15mm of the square-formed end protruding at the top end.
  
  Get someone to sit on the pillion, with the bike on the centrestand, and move the front wheel whilst observing the drive receptor to see if it moves; or connect the cable to the drive unit and spin the wheel -- try to stop the other end of the cable with thumb & forefinger. If you can stop it whilst the front wheel is moving then your drive (or cable) is suspect.
  
  Then, pull the instrument and insert a small terminal screwdriver into the speedo connection and spin it with the shaft of the 'driver between your fingers; see if the needle moves (it should read 5-10mph using this method).
  
  Yes? Then connect the cable to the instrument and insert the other end into a drill chuck to test the entire ass'y.
