Type 2 fork question

Post by superhawk305 » Thu Apr 15, 2010 11:40 pm

Hi guys,

I am new to this site...as far as posting goes but I have been lurking around the site a lot lately.

I would like to know how do you remove the lower aluminum from the shock tube? I am wanting to install new seals. Also, what exactly is the purpose of the allen bolt at the bottom and the smaller bolt on the bottom lower part of the aluminum? Both seem to be able to release fork oil? Why two?

Thanks

Any help is much appreciated

Well you picked the right place to help you through a lot of stuff on these bikes so I will say welcome to the forum and try to answer. I was just as stumped as you on the initial did-assembly, then Davomoto told me to use a small punch on the retainer nut to get it moving. Unless you can fashion a pin wrench to insert into the holes to remove it. The punch worked just as well. Someone else may have a better idea and if so, please speak up.
Once removed, tap the lower tube with a rubber/wood mallet and the whole upper piston assembly will come out. Huge spring inside, and ya can figure out how to replace the seal from there.
The screw in the center bottom keeps the spring rest in place and the outer is the drain.
Hope this clears things up a bit, and keep us posted on your progress. RW

Yeah I have got the fork separated, now it's just each shock tube and the lower aluminum parts. I have also removed the clip that sits on top of the fork seal. So now I just have to tap the aluminum in a down ward direction and that will separate from the shock tube, correct? What is the retainer nut you were talking about?

Thanks

Oooooooops, I did not account for the fact that you are working on a superhawk. They should be fundamentally the same as my scrambler. Retainer, seal, then piston. On the scrambler the retainer nut I wrote about would do the same as the retainer ring you said you have removed. Now that that is cleared up, you can move on to separating the tubes. All I had to do is deliver a couple good raps with a wood mallet and they came apart. Sometimes if you are having trouble, pics do help. You are welcome to pm me your phone # and we can work it out. Awesome....that's how I assumed they came apart after looking at them but really just wanted advice for people that have done it...just incase I was missing something and risk damage to my parts.

Thanks a lot for the help and the pm offer....I sure I will be needing that due to this being my first bike.

Ok one more thing....how hard do you need to hit this thing? I just had the shock tube in a vice and tried to hammer (wooden mallet) the lower aluminum cover off and it's not moving. I did remove the lower allen and the drain bolt when I tried to do this.

Try sliding the upper fork tube downward, and then pulling up hard for a slide hammer type of effect. This should seperate the two assemblies without any damage.
