When did CB77 first come out without a kick start?

Post by rone » Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:25 pm

I just saw a picture of a restored 1965 CB77 and it did not have a kick start. Was '65 the first year that Honda went exclusively with electric start on the CB77?

They all had kick starts. The picture you saw most likely had it removed.

Kick start

Was that a fairly common thing to do, or is it pretty unusual? I can't think of a reason to do it unless the shaft snapped and someone thought it was easier and cheaper to just eliminate the whole exterior kick pedal.

It seems to have been a common thing to do for racers. I guess for street applications, you probably have a bit more foot room without it. And, I was always told that if I had a choice between bump starting it and kick starting it, better to bump start it. If you are not careful and you let that kick start lever fling back, you could potentially crack that clutch cover, and then you'd have problems.

Someone could correct me on that, if I'm totally out in left field....
