1963 CB77 Rear Sprocket

Post by Loudo » Thu Jan 01, 2009 1:08 pm

Hey, everyone...regarding this '63 CB77 I'm working on as journaled in the "Restoration" thread, I'm looking at the rear sprocket and thinking this is something I'm going to want to replace before too long. I don't know what constitutes a sprocket that is shot, but even though it's not dished out between the teeth like I see with bicycle sprockets the teeth are generally sharp points with no "meat" left at the tips. My sprocket is a 32-tooth and doesn't have any holes except the four bolt attachment holes and a hole just large enough for the axle. So I'm looking at eBay and the various NOS retailers and note that there are sprockets of all kinds of sizes available with all manner of stock numbers that don't jibe with my parts manual. According to my parts manual, a 30-tooth appears to be standard because all the other sprockets (8 of them) state "optional" in the "Remarks" column. I note there is not a 32-tooth sprocket listed. Is it safe to say the sprocket on my bike is non-stock?

I'm curious about the opinions of y'all regarding the proper sprocket for this bike. Also, should I just spend $25-30 for a new chain instead of fussing with the old chain?

15-30 is the correct stock gearing for the CB77s. Honda did not offer a 32, so it is AM. It's always best to replace chain and both sprockets as a set. I run 15-30 on my stocker, and 15-32 on my cafe' bike for a little more pep. The tyre of riding you'll be doing the most of will dictate the gearing you choose to run.

Full agreement! Change the final drive as a set. Old chains will knacker new sprockets and old sprockets will knacker new chains.
