Leaving those forks naked

Post by jlerma » Tue Sep 21, 2004 9:08 am

i want to install some clipon handlebars for a psuedo racer /street bike. (much like this superhawk: http://www.honda305.com/image/racer/tt/cb72-201.jpg

ive taken out the the upper and mid covers. Is it possible to leave it like that? Were those covers serving any purpose? when i look down into the fork (where the chrome cover starts) i see some oil.

In Bill Silvers guide the CY section says that the mid fork covers were left in place and clamped. But researching the net, i can see most racers removed these. Here is another pic of this type of modification on a superhawk: http://www.teamgba.com/teamgba/cb77_305 ... acers1.jpg

Get thee to the local Yamaha folks and order a pair of fork wipers: their part # 584-23144-50 at about $10.00 each. If you want it to look "right" have a machinest cut off an inch to an inch and a half of the chrome seal carrier. The wipers will need to be fastened to the carrier with some RTV and the "small" end fits perfectly on the fork tubes.
