I got it from the second owner who bought it in 66. Only has 5k miles. It would seem odd that someone swapped out parts on a bike that shouldn't have needed them. Is there any benefit by doing what you think they may have done?

Yes. The fenders, air covers fenders and may be other that have been changed from Silver to Red.
This happened most times because owners saw so may of these bikes that they wanted "Their Bike".. .lm
