Air Filter Issues

Post by francesca_you_betcha » Mon May 09, 2011 11:45 pm

So, I bought a 1967 cb77 that had lived in a barn for 25 years...
$1,200 later, I have a decently running, rough-around-the-edges machine.

My mechanic tells me that the air filters he put on it to get her running are making her run lean, resulting in a sort of sputtery ride.

My question: should I try to find "original" style air filters? Where should I look for these?

I see some nice looking repro parts out of Asia, but I'd love a recommendation.

Thanks!

I'm guessing that since he's a mechanic that he's already adjust the air/fuel screw to it's limit? If that's the case, I'd rather go with larger jets than a more restrictive filter.

air filters

Cool, another superhawk in Austin. Maybe we can get a pack together for a ride sometime.

Retrobikes at http://www.olypen.com/retro/ has your repro air filters for a reasonable price. If you don't have original brackets, tubes, and springs, they're out there somewhere, a little harder to find.

Please don't ride too far with engine running lean, it can have catastrophic results.

How about some pix? --Lee Webb

Welcome.
I live in Kerrville and may be of help.
In the 60's when these bikes were new even then there was a saying which is still true today.

"Your carb problems are in direct proportion to the miss-adjustment of your points"!

Ya can check the timing easily by following the procedure in the FAQ section to the left (Yellow info) and How I adjust my engine.
To just check timing all ya will need is 12 volt light as described.
Get in touch if ya think I can help. ..........lm

Welcome Francesca,

Ohio Cycle has inlet tubes and springs/clamps as well as repro. filter elements.

Good luck!

Wait, wait, wait? You have BETTER filters, your bike is running lean, and you want to change back to more restrictive filters instead of just rejetting? Por que?
