Rear shock strip

Post by Rookhill » Tue May 03, 2011 2:17 pm

Hello. Does any one know if the damping case and plunger come apart ? I would like to re-plate the height adjusting ring but it doesn't fit over the mounting eye attached to the end of the plunger.
I have noticed that there are two small plug holes on the top of the damping case. Are the any thing to do with removal?
Many thanks H.
P.S.
Paint and powder coat come back this week, will post pics of before and after.

Hi Rookhill

Yes you have to find / make a tool to undo that threaded ring, but beware as the shock casing will be peened over to prevent it coming undone.

I made a set of tools to dismantle mine which included a puller to withdraw the shock absorber internals.

Cheers

Yet again G-Man you have saved me time. If you're at any of the shows let me know, I owe you a pint or two !

Cheers H.

Hi Rookhill

My shock bodies and covers are ready to pick up from the chromers now so I'll pick them up when I get back to UK. Will post some more pics here when I start putting the shocks back together.

The peening of the shock body goes into the slots in the threaded ring so it is a good idea to drill out the pips before you attempt to undo the ring. It's usually quite tight. I used a piece of 3mm flat bar, drilled a hole for the damper rod then bent the end at 90 degrees so that it would drop right into the slot.

The bush just below the ring and seal in my picture is very tight so you need something to pull it out if you're not going to have oil and bits flying everywhere.

Cheers

Thanks G-Man. I have been making up tools in the workshop to strip the shocks. I'm a fabricator/welder so I have all the bits to hand, and if the boss is reading I did it during the dinner break!
I've attached some before and after pictures of the frame/swinging arm which have been powder coated. The fork/rear shock shrouds, headlight brackets, tool box and petrol tank I will spray myself.
The chrome work will be shipped off in the next couple of weeks.

Cheers H.

Nice looking project. Mine was a blue one too. Looks like you have a solid starting point. Are those tank badges original? They look good.

Should get my shock bodies and covers back from the chromers this week.
