New Member - Superhawk Restore
Hello, I have begun the restoration of a Superhawk that my brother and I bought in early 70's and restored once before when we were in high school in South Dakota. It broke down again about 6 years ago and it sat in an indoor storage since then in SD where my brother still lives. I have returned it to my current home in VA to restore this sentimental value bike. I have already started tearing it down to determine the cause of the breakdown. The transmission has failed and now that I have split the case, I found that several of the gears, second and third gear, have several teeth completely gone and found at the bottom of the oil reservoir. Included are photos of the engine serial # and the frame serial #. Hope someone in the forum can help me with any information from these numbers. I am deciding whether to continue the restoration but am leaning toward going ahead with it. Most all of the bike appears to be in good shape and needs to be cleaned up. I appreciate any help, suggestions, comments.

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you have a decent place to start from. At least all the major parts are there.
You can find used transmissions on ebay all day long for decent prices.
The cracked case side is a common problem and because of that, they can get quite expensive. $80+ depending on the condition.
I'm curious as to what other damage was caused by those teeth floating around on the inside. It might be cheaper to find another engine than replace all that was broken if it's extensive.
Good luck with the build!

Superhawk Restoration - Transmission
Thanks cyclon36, I have since looked at the main shaft and counter shaft gears and cleaned up the two halves of the engine cases.
I found that Main Shaft 2nd gear had severe wear/friction damage and 3rd gear was missing 8 gear teeth.
On the Counter Shaft, 2nd gear had 5 teeth misshing and 3rd gear had severe wear/friction damage on a couple of the gear teeth.
Otherwise, all of the other gears, shafts, and other parts of the transmission are without any damage. I still need to really clean up everything, and take the main shaft and countershaft apart and check the integrity of all of it. But for now, all I see that I need are the four gears and not the whole trasmission. I know that I may just look at getting the whole transmission replacement.
I did see one on eBay that was the complete trasmission but it was from a 1961, my bike is a 1965.
I don't know if this amount of time difference will have any compatability issues. Do you know? Anybody else? Thanks for any help/comments
