CB77 - is it correct?

Post by Hondabritboy » Sat Feb 18, 2023 12:19 pm

Hi all, newbie to this forum. I had a CB72 in the late 1960's and quite fancy another in my old age. Interested in a 1965 CB77 here in the UK but it was imported some time ago and not known from which country it originally came (after Japan of course!). It is in a dark metallic red, which could be Candy Red which was used on other models, but doesn't appear to be a correct colour for a CB72/77 - or is it perhaps in markets other than UK?
Also it has chrome mudguards (fenders), which are non standard in the UK - again maybe fitted in other markets. Most unusually it has matching engine and frame numbers (where they were mostly within a few hundred of each other).
Can anyone shed light on whether this is likely to be a correct specification and if so, in which market?
Thanks for any help.
Chris.

I believe the last production run of the superhawks came with chrome fenders. look at the gas tank, the latest ones had the crossover hose deleted (Honda's bean counters decided it wasn't necessary so they deleted it). As far as the tank color, ? , all the ones I've seen were painted the frame color.

Chris, Please enter your bike into the survey and I'll cross reference the serial numbers to get a pretty accurate year of production. The last of them did come with chrome fenders and there have been reports of "candy" colors on some bikes (usually Scramblers). On a CB77, it's possible, I suppose, but more likely a repaint along the way.

I'd need to see the frame serial number to say more about this.

Hi Mike and Michael, thanks for your help. The bike is for sale with a dealer (photo attached). He contacted David Silver's here in the UK and he identified it from the engine and frame nos to have been made in 1965. Thus it is not towards the end of production and seemingly cannot legitimately wear the chrome fenders. The frame is painted the same colour as the tank, headlight cowling etc though it is not yet clear that this paint is correct for any year or market. I don't have the engine / frame nos but if I purchase the bike will add it to the survey.
The bike does look very nice, but for me it has to be correct specification too.
Kind regards,
Chris.

Interestingly, I have just found an advert in the Marketplace - for sale section of this site for a Candy Apple Red CB77 - a 1967 bike. As it is stated to be an original 2300 mile bike, it would appear to validate this colour as correct, at least for a 1967 bike. The bike for sale here in the UK is a 1965 so is this colour (and chrome fenders) correct for a 1965 bike or has someone changed colour and to chrome fenders for personal taste and ignored originality?

It also has the late oval tail light.

Without the frame SN, the year of manufacture is an educated guess. Based on what has been observed about other bikes, either the bike is a later model than 1965 or, as you wrote, someone may have modified it.

The chrome fenders and the oval T/L correspond to the end of production; possibly the color also.

The bike in question is gorgeous, regardless of the frame or paperwork numbers.
