Is this problem more likely to be in the starter or just a stuck starter button. Before i start taking things a part it would be nice to know where i'm most likley to find the problem.
Brian
Starter runs as soon as i turn the key.

starter button
Let's see, power goes from battery to starter solenoid, then to contact in starter switch assembly that is grounded out by pin on button going through brass bracket to complete circuit and actuate solenoid, sending power to starter motor.
So it's probably a short in the switch assembly. Check for the bakelite contact board being pushed out of place or bare wire touching the case. Watch out for tiny spring in button, it'll try to get away.
I've been fighting this for awhile. I ended up splicing in a 1-1/2" piece of wire (soldered to back of contact) to replace fraying wire inside case. Plus some shrink tube. The original wire was too short, pulling the contact board out of place just enough to ground the contact. Routing the new wire more into the case, then out to handlebars seemed to fix this. I guess we'll see
Hope this helps --Lee

stuck solenoid
If solenoid was stuck closed wouldn't starter run even with ignition off?
