Issues with installation of electronic ignition CA77

Post by Greggie-e » Wed Dec 09, 2009 7:45 pm

Hi all,
I have one of these new electronic ignition kits for the CA77 and have a few questions for anyone who has installed one before.

The instructions say that the red wire should be connected to the primary switched power source on the coil and the yellow wire should go to the coil connection that is not switched.
My problem is that my coil seems to be switched on both sides. Both sides read 0 volts with the bike off and 12 volts with the bike switched on.

a) Is my electrical system incorrect?

b) Will having 12 volts connected to the yellow wire blow up my electronic ignition?

c) Is the primary connection the one with the "+" symbol (I think it is) or the "-" symbol?

Also slightly related is that the screws for my points cover and the points themselves have had their heads butchered. When I went to the metric nut and bolt shop they said the threads are not metric. Are they a special thread?

Cheers,
Greg

I have just thought that I should have disconnected the wires from the coil before testing them to see if they turn on with the ignition.

Otherwise of course both are going to register pwer when the bike is turned on....

I have also been to the nut and bolt shop, the bolts that came out of my points system are definately not run of the mill metric. I hope someone hasn't forced the wrong ones in.

Greg, screws are JIS metric. Try fast fred, he has JIS screws. Sorry, can't help with the e-ignition

3, 4, 5, & 12mm bolts changed thread pitch from JIS to ISO standards around 1966, so nothing new will replace them.
You can find these on e-bay fairly often.
The point cover plate uses 5x30 (old)JIS....0.9 thread pitch
The breaker plate screws are 5x12 (old)JIS..0.9 thread pitch
New 5mm thread pitch is 0.8.......not much difference, but enough not to interchange.

right, I thought they were a bit odd.

I have ordered some through the local Honda shop, I won't hold my breath though.

I might post a wanted add on the forum, most of the eBay guys want $26 to post to Australia.
That is just not going to happen.

I have posted a wanted add

http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4932

also has anyone found the perfect spot to mount the electronic ignition box?

I was going to put it "inside" the frame in from where the carb covers go.
Although this is kind of close to the ignition leads, but I think it will be alright.

An thought?

well it is in, and I replaced the rectifier with one from Ohio cycles too.

I must say the bike runs a lot better.

A hell of a lot better.
I have yet to take it for a ride, but on the bench iit started easier, it reved up quicker and also reved higher.

I am looking forward to taking it for a blast....

the installation was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be too.

I had to put my old damaged screws back in though, still looking for some replacements
