Remove the small cover on the right side of the starter motor and be sure the chain and sprocket move.
All CB72/77 rotors show CB72 or CB72 (L). .........lm

With the ignition OFF, wedge a big screwdriver momentarily across the two big studs on the solenoid -- there will be sparks and the starter will spin if the motor and the battery are OK. If it does, then the solenoid is probably crudded; it can be disassembled and the contacts cleaned with fine Emery cloth or Wet 'n' Dry paper.

If the motor doesn't turn then that's probably where the fault lies. Also, check the battery voltage at the terminals whilst shorting the solenoid studs. If the voltage collapses then the battery is at fault, but I suspect, from your description of the symptoms, that the battery is OK or else the solenoid would 'chatter' when the starter button was pressed.

if the solenoid is clicking (when you press the starter button), then you have the coil wire fitted to the correct terminal. The heavier cables can be attached whichever way round is mechanically more suitable.
