points question

Post by Davo » Sun Aug 30, 2009 3:13 pm

Once again thanks to all posters, making some headway but stuck again. I contacted Ohio Cycle to purchase new points for my 69 CA77. What kind of points do you need he asks ??????. KOKUSAN or NIPPONDENSO. He told me that they had different points plates and were not interchangeable. So I pulled the plate off both the 65 CA78 and 69 CA77 that I have they seem similar but not exact and I can not see anything that tells me which one to choose. One of them has very small print but can not make out the print. Any Help ? Thanks

Davo, I had the same problem trying to read the No.s on my needle jets. I used a touch of graphite powder(rubbed into the numbers), my "250" reading glasses and a magnifieng glass, Waala crystal clear. It sucks getting old.

I think there is an ND or may say"DENSO" stamped on the points plate if you have NIP's.Just from the four or five 64' and later CA77's I tore apart they all had the ND's on them. But I guess you can not go by that if someone swapped out the whole plate and points.

As it turns out I have both the Nip & KOKUSAN points plates from the two bikes I have so I went with the KOKUSAN and they fit the plate yet I still do not have spark. Frustrated, does anyone think that by switching points and point plate from bike to bike would make a difference. So many of you have commented on rookies and bikes that don't run. you are all correct. I not quiting yet. thanks davo

What about the condensor? Is it connected correctly to the points? Are you not getting spark across the points when you open them manually or from the plugs?

I believe the condensor is hooked up corectly but I have not yet mounted it to the engine, that may be my problem. I still do not have spark to the points. I plan on dropping the engine for painting but Trying to avoid dropping the engine to install the condensor until I get it running. Any suggestion.

try grounding the condenser, and give it a try.
