Different Exhaust Patterns

Post by slopokecr » Fri Feb 20, 2009 7:26 pm

My CA77 is runnin crappy again. I can only get about 10 miles out of a set of Plugs before they foul. I thought I had this solved and for a while had the plugs that sandy color. I have raised the clip to the 4th notch from the bottom, and have the air screw out 1 3/4, but they still go black quickly. Im afraid to keep leaning it out too much. Here's a couple of things i have noticed:
1) When I put my hands behind the exhaust pipes, the left side has an even exhaust pattern, while the RS is uneven.
2) After a few minutes of idling, and ride around the block (.5 miles) a new set of plugs is black, with the RS having a slight wet look.

Valve/ Seal problem?? Uncharted territory for this neophite.

Sounds like it is rich if it is wet and fouling. Is your float adjusted properly?Did you clean the carb out? Also, when starting cold will it start without giving it choke?Do you have a tight seal(o-ring's) around the carb spacer to the head? You may want to read some old posts in this section, this may help solve problem.

Because ya have only one carb and only one side isn't firing as it should I recommend ya:

Swap Plug caps and see if problem moves. (cut 1/4 inch off wire end when you remove the caps and those caps screw off and on)
Check the valve clearance to .004 both valves if above didn't solve problem. ...........lm

Finally had a chance to take a stab at the seemingly "easy" task of valve adjustment. In my case, it involves removing the tank-which was a whole other hang up for me. (Ill save that knee-slapper for another time). Anyway, I assume the (.004) measurement I am taking, is the gap between the valve adjuster and the top of the valve. Where the adjuster makes contact with the valve, is down in a recessed well. Do I need a narrower (than typical auto part store) feeler guage? Am I measuring the distance between the top of the valve and the adjuster, OR where the adjuster makes contact with the valve (down in the recession)?

As far as swapping spark plug caps, I dont know if I am getting good 'purchase' when attaching to wire. The wire, and pointy thingy in the cap arrive with each other at a 90 degree angle, and you cant really "screw" it on. (like auto caps) Maybe I have the wrong caps? (they do have the Hm logo on them). Hopefully there is some trick im not aware of.

Thanks for your patience on these (eye-roller) questions.

If you trim a 1/4 inch off of the end of the wires as Ed suggested, you will be able to hold the wire, and screw the cap into it. Here's a pic of Motion Pros tool for valve clearance Most moto shops sell them, around $5, or check thier website. They aslo have a nice tool for removing rotors for $10

Thanks Davamoto!
I have made something like you have in the pic. My qeustion for you is; what is the width (not thickness) of those end pieces?

additionally, the pointy thingy inside my plug cap is not threaded. I have trimmed back the wire as suggested, but when I "screw" the cap on, it does not bite, and can pull off the wire easily. Should there be some threaded component that is missing from my caps?
